Choosing the Right Silage Wrap<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you\u2019re picking silage wrap, it\u2019s not just about price\u2014quality matters for bale preservation, feed value, and customer satisfaction.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to look out for:<\/p>\n

Thickness (Microns) \u2013 Don\u2019t Get Caught Out!<\/strong><\/h4>\n
    \n
  • Standard thickness for most farmers: 25 microns<\/li>\n
  • Recently, some cheaper wraps have been sold as 25 \u00b5m but are actually thinner\u2014leading to lower bale quality<\/li>\n
  • Thinner wrap = more air ingress, poorer fermentation, more spoilage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
    <\/h5>\n
    How to check thickness yourself:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
      \n
    1. Cut a clean section of unused film<\/li>\n
    2. Fold it 4\u20135 times<\/li>\n
    3. Measure the folded thickness with a micrometre or digital calliper<\/li>\n
    4. Divide by the number of folds<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      Example:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
        \n
      • Folded thickness: 0.125 mm (125 \u00b5m)<\/li>\n
      • Folded 5 times: 125 \u00b5m \u00f7 5 = 25 \u00b5m single layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        Tip:<\/strong> Weigh the rolls\u2014compare with a trusted 25 \u00b5m roll. If it\u2019s lighter, it\u2019s probably thinner film.<\/h5>\n

        Tear Resistance<\/strong><\/h4>\n
          \n
        • High tear resistance = better for bales that will be moved multiple times<\/li>\n
        • Stronger film costs a little more but reduces punctures and feed loss<\/li>\n
        • If you have frequent bird or stick damage, a tougher wrap can pay for itself<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Packaging Clues<\/strong><\/h4>\n
            \n
          • Rolls sold without a box can be a red flag\u2014they may be off-spec or unbranded stock<\/li>\n
          • Branded, boxed rolls often have batch tracking and better QC<\/li>\n
          • Unless you know exactly who you are buying from and trust the spec, be careful!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Colour Choice & Climate<\/strong><\/h4>\n

            • White<\/strong> \u2013 Reflects heat, keeps bales cooler; best for hot climates<\/li>\n
            • Black<\/strong> \u2013 Absorbs heat, warms bales faster; good for cool climates<\/li>\n
            • Green<\/strong> \u2013 Blends into the landscape for a more discreet look<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
